Zirconia can be used for dental implants, which are dental root replacements, covered with a ceramic crown also called a replacement tooth.

“Are zirconia implants metal free? Zirconia starts out as zirconium metal, but when treated it stabilizes and turns into crystal, it turns into a zirconium oxide which is a ceramic and contains no metals.”

Zirconia is a crystalline zirconium dioxide. Currently, a material for the fabrication of implant frameworks and abutments is zirconia oxide (ZrO2) ceramic.

What is a zirconia dental implant?

Zirconia can be used for dental implants, which are root replacements, covered with a ceramic crown also called a replacement tooth. Zirconia is a ceramic material that is white and opaque compared to titanium, which is a gray metallic material.

- It is white, so the metallic color will not show through the gum, what happens with titanium implants.

-It is more aesthetic.

-It is more biocompatible than titanium ones.

What are some of the advantages of zirconia implants?

1. Aesthetics; Zirconia provides a more natural white color than gray metal titanium implants.

2. Biocompatibility; Researchers have shown that patients with zirconia implants have no problem with inflammation or rejection and the implant fully assimilates into the jaw. Recent studies have shown that zirconia surfaces accumulate less bacteria than pure commercial titanium.

3. Hypoallergenic; In long-term clinical trials, patients did not develop implant sensitivities that can be observed with titanium implants.

4. Healthier teeth and gums; Zirconia is resistant to corrosion and does not promote bacterial growth.

5. Durability; Zirconia is durable and inflexible under pressure.

What are the possible disadvantages of titanium implants?

1. It can interfere with autoimmune diseases

2. Flavor of metal

3. Insomnia

4. Electric charge when you are near other metals.

5. Allergic reactions
